Erin Malone

Erin Malone has over 25 years of experience leading experience design teams, deconstructing complex systems and designing web and software applications, and social experiences.

She is principal at Experience Matters Design, specializing in designing systems, complex internal tools, user research and social interfaces. She is currently working with the Anti-Defamation League’s Center for Technology and Society, fighting hate in online social spaces and games. She is also the Chair of the Interaction Design BFA program at California College of the Arts and is an Associate Professor. She teaches IXD Foundations, Visual Interaction Design, Systems Thinking, Interaction Design History and Behavior.

As a consultant she has led user experience and strategy projects for Capital One, Autodesk, Facebook, Akamai, Verizon, Intuit, Netflix, Neptune Financial, The Hunt, PacerPro, Grokker, SocialText, Wisegate, Yahoo! and a bunch of other small and large companies. Prior to consulting, she was in leadership positions at Yahoo!, AOL and AltaVista and individual contributor positions at Adobe and Kodak. She was a founding member of the IA Institute, former chief editor of Boxes and Arrows for 5 years and is the co-author of the book Designing Social Interfaces 2nd and 1st editions, published by O’Reilly Media.

Her most recent speaking engagements have featured her work at ADL, deconstructing the ecosystem of online hate and challenging designers to consider alternate ways of designing social spaces.

She is currently writing a book about Women in Interaction Design.
