Melissa Hines is an award-winning graphic designer with a background in media and nonprofit communications. Born and raised in Boston, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Writing, Literature, and Publishing from Emerson College. Melissa is passionate about amplifying underrepresented voices to build an inclusive community.
Previously, she’s worked in public health, designing data-rich materials to educate audiences about the health disparities impacting women of color, people living with HIV, and the LGBTQ community. Organizations across the country, including GLSEN, have helped promote these materials. She’s led multiple rebrands, including that of Boomerangs, a family of thrift stores owned and operated by AIDS Action Committee. That project won a Graphic Design USA Health + Wellness Design Award. Melissa has also worked in human rights advocacy and developed compelling campaigns motivating people to engage with their elected officials about environmental justice, immigration reform, and workers’ rights. As a volunteer, Melissa was a Big Sister for the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston and Co-Director of Communications and Marketing for Young Nonprofit Professional Network of Boston.
Currently, Melissa is the Senior Designer at Her Campus Media, the #1 media company for college women. She leads a team of designers, nerds out while developing cross-departmental systems, and creates empowering designs. Melissa is also the Director of Diversity & Inclusion for AIGA Boston. As a board member, her focus is to support the organization’s efforts to create and implement a community-specific diversity and inclusion strategy.
