Sonja Kuijpers runs STUDIO TERP, her one-woman information graphics studio based in Eindhoven, Netherlands. She designs (data-)visualizations for a diversity of clients such as Scientific American, Philips, Frankfurter Allgemeiner Zeitung, as well as small institutions, companies, and publishers. The diversity in subjects is what makes this field so interesting, to be gaining knowledge on so many different topics. She is driven to addresses several themes herself, especially mental health, trauma, equality, and LGBTQ. This explicitly shows in her self-initiated projects such as her very personal ‘A View on despair’, for which she received an Information is Beautiful Gold Award in 2019.
Sonja is a big advocate of experimenting with shapes and graphic styles to add an extra aesthetic to a visualization, balancing dataviz and dataart. She approaches numbers with curiosity, trying to ‘translate’ what the information entails on a human level, also trying to open dialogues and break through stigmas.
