Exploring Service Patterns for Social Services

Inspired by GDS’ service pattern provocation at 2018’s Service Design in Government conference, this was a collaborative exploration of service patterns through the specific lens of social service experiences. We drew from our experience leading design initiatives for American social service programs at the Department of Veteran Affairs, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, HealthCare.gov, and pilots with a variety of state governments. We invited designers from governments all over the world to share their experiences designing social service programs.

The ideas gathered in this workshop are being used to form an initial library of service patterns that can be used by designers in any government to build high-quality services.
